A full-time staff of 10 Stanford University students directs SMYSP and live with the high school students on campus. In addition, many Stanford professors and medical personnel participate in the program. This program will give an intense and rewarding educational experience. Luke will attend lectures given by Stanford professors and students, participate in computer and writing seminars, and conduct laboratory work. To develop leadership and interpersonal skills, they offer workshops and discussions on public speaking and multicultural issues.
Luke will receive hospital experience by volunteering at the Stanford or Veterans Affairs Hospital two days a week. The hospital positions range from working in the operating room, helping patients, assisting radiologists and participating in anatomy labs. This program provides full scholarships as well as high school science credit. His relationship with the program continues after the formal program ends.
Luke's achievements include RLHS Track and Field team, Student Leadership, Junior Class Representative, Pep band, California Scholarship Federation, Junior Prom Committee and community involvement. Luke's outstanding GPA and background in science and math made him a qualified applicant. His ambition after high school is to enter college and one day to become a doctor.
